Since 2019, Lee has developed an extensive corpus of works that reconstructs her own narrative out of data fragments: “data” of her virtual relationship to her estranged mother. Employing archival materials, 3D animation and AR integration, she creates a shrine to her reimagined mother, to a generic presence capable of giving guidance and approximate love. Hence, Magic Mother extends out from Ahreum’s ongoing series, My Mother is Data. The series is the result of a four year journey exploring the limited intimacy between her and her mother - with whom she has only been in contact via email and phone - to tease out where the virtual and real intersect in the digital era. In 2014, Ahreum Lee heard news of her mother for the very last time. Her father called her to announce that her mother had died: this turned out to be a lie.
